The three components of essential piano maintenance that need to be adjusted periodically are pitch, tone, and touch. Piano tuning is the fine adjustment of the tuning pins (to which the strings are attached) so that all the strings are at their correct tension or 'pitch' and conform to a series of intervals giving the piano its harmonious musical quality when played. Tone quality and evenness is maintained by voicing, most often by adjusting the hammer felt shape and density and its relationship with the strings. Touch describes the feel of the mechanism via the keys. Making adjustments to the piano action alters the relationships of the various moving components and is termed 'regulation'. An out-of-tune piano, an unresponsive touch, or a poor sounding piano can discourage even novice musicians. Regular tuning and maintenance allows the technician to keep the performance of the piano at its optimum and greatly enhances the enjoyment factor for both the pianist and those listening. SO HOW OFTEN SHOULD A PIANO BE TUNED? Piano manufacturers universally recommend servicing at least two times a year to keep the piano sounding its best and performing properly each time you sit down to play. In our temperate coastal climate many of our clients opt for annual tuning and for many pianos this works well. WHY DOES A PIANO GO OUT OF TUNE? The main influence causing a piano to go out of tune is climate variation. Changes in humidity and temperature cause timber components in a piano to either absorb moisture from the atmosphere or release moisture, either way string tension is affected slightly with these seasonal climatic variations. Direct sun or other strong heat sources can also be very harmful to any musical instrument so correct placement of a piano within a room can play a significant part in tuning stability. It is recommended that maintenance and servicing of your piano should only be performed by a qualified and registered piano technician to ensure it is kept maintained to the best possible standard. We bring the following attributes to all our service work so you can be certain your piano is getting the treatment it deserves.
