Steve has been practising in criminal law since 1987 and has practised as a barrister sole since 2002. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 2014.
Steve is a leading trial and appellate lawyer. His practice principally consists of criminal defence work, although he also undertakes some civil litigation (including proceeds of crime litigation), insurance litigation, resource management litigation, regulatory & disciplinary proceedings, transport law and opinion work. He appears before all primary and appellate courts in New Zealand.
Steve has been involved in a number of significant criminal trials and appeals as leading or sole counsel, including trials involving allegations of murder & serious violent offending, sexual offending, membership of organised criminal groups, serious drug importation, manufacture & dealing, serious fraud & financial crime, health & safety prosecutions, immigration & tax offences, and resource management prosecutions. He has also appeared in extradition proceedings.
He is available to accept private instructions in all matters. He is also an approved legal aid provider for all categories of criminal proceedings in all trial and appellate courts, and can accept instructions as preferred counsel in serious cases.
